Sustainable water management

New development should use public open spaces to naturally manage stormwater

Upload main diagram or image

Why is this important?

Development adjacent to existing water features, including rivers, lakes, canals, docks and wetlands has an important role to play in enhancing the value of blue infrastructure as public realm, habitat, ecological corridor and natural capital asset.

Recommended Best Practice

Buildings may face the water and leave a sufficient buffer zone to allow for watercourses and banks to be maintained and for current and potential future flood defences. Opportunities to create walking and cycling routes along watercourses where appropriate need to be encouraged.

National Objectives addressed

  • Increasing social interaction in streets and spaces
